A year in review: Jerry's first year of CrossFit

175 classes attended

For those of you who do not know me beyond my love of deadlifts and hatred of burpees, I am a research/data junky. I fully believe "if you do not measure it, you will not improve it." On my first day at ChalkDust, after running 2 miles and rowing forever (Big Man Killer on day 1), I found a local place with an InBody Scanner. InBody is not as accurate as a BodPod, but it is directionally close enough to keep me on track and more accurate than a bathroom scale.

Beyond the statistical improvements, there are 2 other observations from CrossFit. The first one is my mobility. I have significantly less pain in my joints (specifically my knees) than I have for most of my adult life. Before joining, I had the typical "bro education" that you never do anything past parallel because it is terrible for your knees – All I can say is I wish I would have started CrossFit 15 years ago! Secondly, the community. While "community" is a bit stereotypical of CrossFit for outsiders, looking in, I can say whole-heartedly at ChalkDust it is real. I went to Urban Active/LA Fitness/ now called Esporta for over a decade, and I can count on just my fingers the number of people I knew their names and probably, on one hand, those I knew their last names.

Thank you all for welcoming Amy and me into the community, especially Mike Walters, Katelyn Walters, & Lynette Berger (for all of her help with my nutrition), and I am personally looking forward to what year #2 brings in this journey!
